State Pension Age

An individual is entitled to take their State pension(s) upon reaching the State pension age (SPA).

The SPA is currently 65 for men and 60 for women. However, the SPA for women is to be changed to 65 and this change will be phased in from 5 April 2010 to 6 April 2020.

The SPA for women born prior to 6 April 1950 will remain at 60.

The SPA for women born between 6 April 1950 and 5 April 1955 will be calculated according to a sliding scale. This sliding scale can be viewed and downloaded here.

The SPA for women born between 6 April 1955 and 5 April 1959 will be 65.

In the Pension Bill 2006, the government reformed the State pensions. This reform has the SPA for men and women increasing from 65 to 68 over a number of years, in line with life expectancy. This sliding scale can be viewed and downloaded here.
